Secret Of Getting Success With Blog Directories
| When trying to promote a blog, you will often read advice that one of the first things you should do is to submit your blog to Blog Directories. On first seeing this it seems a good idea, but is it really? There are hundreds of directories and my opinion, based on a proper trial, is that the majority of them are a waste of time and effort. They are quick enough to insist on reciprocal links but what you often get in exchange is absolutely nothing. I'll say straight away, before anyone starts shouting, that there are some worthwhile directories - more on them later. When I started this blog I submitted it to about 50 directories. I didn't expect a flood of hits but I did think I'd get some response. Let's name a few where I've have got nothing in return for my efforts. Nil response: blogarama.com, blogcatalog.com, blog.britnlog.com, blogsweet.com, blogoozle.com, infiniteinfo.net, blogdirs.com, blog-directory.org, bloguniverse.com, lsblogs.com, thevital.net, kookkoo.com, insaneblog.com, blogsbycity.com, findingblogs.com ... and I could go on. Next we come to those where I have had just one referral. In most cases, I expect that this was actually from the directory themselves when they checked out the blog. One response: bulletize.com, globeofblogs.com, myblog2u.com, bloglines.com. Now in fairness, to all of the above mentioned, it could be that it is this style of blog that isn't attracting the visitors from directories. Perhaps it's more difficult with money or business blogs and perhaps, again, others are getting referrals. All I can say is: this is my personal experience. Okay, lets move on to the 'good guys' in the Blog Directory world. Or should I just say, so as not to upset anyone, the ones that have been good to me. Top Ten Blog Directories (based on referrals over 10 weeks) 1. Top Lists - 106 2. King Of The Blogs - 24 3. Today - 20 4. Blogger Talk - 18 5. Blog Show Off - 12 6. Blog Hub - 12 7. eMarketing Blogs - 6 8. Blogdup - 6 9. 2-Review - 5 10 Blogwise - 3 Obviously the one that stands out is Rhyss Wynne's Top Lists who has sent me over 100 visitors - thanks Rhyss! Now the interesting thing is that the three top directories are fairly new. This seems to be the secret for getting success with directories : get in while they are new and are still building their data base. Once they are well established your blog may well get lost amongst the many. I'll be watching to see if the referrals from my top three gradually dwindle as they expand their lists - hopefully they won't. Based on my findings, what I'll be doing in future is looking out for any new directories. Good luck! Mike. Advert of the day: Will you work harder for yourself than your boss? i actually was gonna post about this on blog about your blog.
the most "overrated" ways to get traffic sort of thing. blog directories is a huge 'myth' it has gotten me very few referrals to my sites.
the only hits i got from that 'today' one was within like 3 days of registering.
any other ideas you have feel free... also i definitely suggest using Digg.. has gotten me a few hits, i would always digg your posts, id hope you would do the same with mine
check your email!

Thanks again for the heads up! I've no idea why toplist so popular, but it seems to be. I think because of the community aspect behind it.
Could be wrong though. Would be interesting to see how many referrals everybody else has got though!
obono: Thanks, glad you found something of interest.
poet: Great minds! I must look at Digg again. I'd read reports that it wasn't very effective so I never bothered with it.
Rhys: That would be interesting to see if you are the 'tops' with other bloggers.
Thanks all,
Mike.
Getting direct traffic isn't the only use of directories, or even the primary. Directories are a great source of backlinks that help you increase page rank.
lennyp: Thanks for that, it's a good point. I had pondered over the links angle as it's something that's good in theory. I'm not sure though that, personally, I've been able to 'prove' this to my own satisfaction.
Mike.
I totally agree! Rhyss' directory has given me the most traffic too. Directories on the whole though seem to be incredibly overrated. I recently wrote about how I've achieved most of my traffic here:

MyBlogLog has definitely been a big source of traffic so far.
