How Important Is PageRank To Money Making?
| I was reading Rob's blog today, as I often do, and his latest post is Google Page Rank Has Come Through. Amongst other things he mentions that Mike's Money Making Mission PageRank is now 5. "Great", I thought but, though I do all sorts of my own stats, I don't really follow PR rankings as a guide to how this blog is doing. I have my own guidelines and, as long as I'm heading towards them, I'm happy. Perhaps I should pay more attention to them as many 'serious' webmasters sweat and worry about PR. PageRank, just in case you are not aware, is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. The numbers are between 1 and 10 - 10 being the highest. Google explain PageRank on their technology page, although I think a better explanation is on the WebWorkShop site. As I seem to be doing okay with PR I had a look at Technorati's Ranking. For this blog it is now at 34225, which I'm pleased about. The lower the number the better. For example, one of my blogs -which I don't really promote - has a Technorati Rank of 2,526,746! So by comparison this blog's rank is pretty good. You can read more about Technorati's Ranking system here but, as they say, they are a 'bunch of geeks'. Then there's the Alexa Ranking ... and so it goes on. Personally I'm more interested in how many referrals I get from search engines. "Ah, but it's all linked up ..." Enjoy your statistics. Good luck, Mike. Subscribe to Mike's Money Making Mission Subscribe to Mike's Money Making Mission by Email ![]() Labels: Google, money making, PageRank, Technorati, uSwitch |

To answer your question in your title, pagerank can be hugely important to making money from blogs.
I'm sponsored by a company, they pay me x amount of money per month to put a link to their website on their blog. I doubt they couldn't care less if one person clicked on the link, all they care about is the link and pagerank. Also, the words that I use to link to them are added to the keywords for the site, a bit like google bombing. Except of linking a picture of George Bush to the words "Miserable Failure", you're linking to a - say - Bookshop with the words "Buy Books".
Nobody knows how pagerank works (it was a collaborative project), but general consensous lot of links, educational and governmental domains, and links from high page rank sources are good. Few links from low page rank sources, links from subdomains (eg. geocities, typepad, but not neccessarily blogspot - due to it being owned by Google), heavy javascript, and unoptimised php, asp and cgi pages are bad.
hey mike! how's things going? been reading your blog for quite sometime now.. interesting stuff..
thanks for dropping by my site :D was wondering can we exchange links? u r in the top ten ! :D

I think that Page Rank is a some kind of indication of the worth of a particular site no matter what anyone says. It seems to be based on original content, links, and time that a site has existed online from what I can tell. You are doing the business on 2 of the 3 so are getting a great page rank after a short amount of time.
I imagine it will result in more search engine referrals for you!
Ive got rank 4 on all the main pages of my blogs (even the webcomic which Im waiting to finish issue one before pimping it, only 30 daily visits) so I think page rank has to do with who links to you and where they link it.
On the other hand, a screencap of the Fantastic Four Trailer where his gonads are visible got dugg and has a page 6 rank. Go figure.
Congrats mate, 5 is great for a main page, shows people are linking to the blog itself not just a random post.
Rhys: Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I didn't actually think anyone would try! I can see some possibilities here.
Michael: I'll see what I can do!
burtle: I think you are right about more referrals. I seem to have more recently though I haven't checked this weeks figure's yet.
jcm: Sounds like gonads could be the answer to - well lots of things. Well done on the PR6.
Thanks all,
Mike.
Hello Mike from another Mike (Email VOrigMichaelOwen@aol.com) Ive just read your yesterdays post about ranking which I found most interesting. Its taken me three months to spell Bloog correctly!!! However, imagine my surprise, my blog counter showed up a referral from Google. I turned it up and, would you believe, I am right at the top (after a sponsored link) out of or so it says, 431.000. Now, after three months blogging, how the hell have I done that? The key words are "bank robber fancy dress." I only wishing I was a fancy dress retailer!! Mike
