Making Money Making Changes
| Life is about change and being flexible. Nothing really stays the same and at times it's necessary to bring about the changes ourselves. Otherwise we can easily get stuck in a rut and end up getting nowhere. It's the same with making money from blogs. It's being flexible with our thinking and actions that makes the difference between those who are successful and those who aren't. If we look at household business names (at least well known in the UK), like Richard Branson of Virgin or Anita Roddick of Body Shop, at times they have had to change things to become the real success that they eventually became. Branson's business life started with a magazine called Student, which was hardly a roaring success. At the time, Retail Price Maintenance was abolished in the UK but record dealers still operated a virtual cartel and kept music prices artificially high. He realised this and saw that a change of direction, by selling mail order records at discount prices, had potential. This was the start of the Virgin trading name - 'because we were novices in business.' Success began by changing primarily from small time publishing to selling records. Then, in 1971, there was a postal workers strike which hit the mail order industry for over five weeks. Many would have sat back and accepted the situation and maybe gone into a spiral of declining profits. Not Branson. He took immediate action and looked for a retail outlet. Suitable premises were found, above an electrical shop, and the first Virgin store was born. And so this has gone on throughout his career on the way to becoming a billionaire. He has constantly looked to change things and to move on: from music business to airlines and so on. With Anita Roddick she had tried business prior to her Bodyshop chain of shops. For example, with borrowed money, she and her husband started a restaurant. A stylish place to sell healthy foods with an Italian flavour. It flopped so she changed things. They altered the restaurant into a char-grill doing the best steak and hamburgers in town. This proved successful and another lesson in business was learned. Give people what they want, not what you think they should want. You can look at dozens of successful business stories and see the same theme. If things aren't doing well change them and give your customers what they want. It's also surprising that somehow this change is often brought about by adversity or failure. It's almost as if the universe is saying that it's time to shake things up a little. This is the same with making money with blogging. It's no good going on flogging a dead horse. If no one wants to read your stuff then change it. Perhaps you might notice that a certain style of post attracts more visitors, comments or emails than others. Maybe there's a subject that readers' respond to more. I've noticed with my blog subscriptions on FeedBurner that they go up and down. This is normal but there is a certain type of post that will increase the number of my subscriptions and others that will show a downturn. I won't say what these are because it probably won't be relevant to your own blog. The point is to observe how things are going. I don't mean churning out miles of statistics but if the number of visitors stays the same or declines - change. If no one clicks on your ads - change. If there's an indication that one affiliate program works and others don't ditch the no-goers and look for more like the profitable one. As in life be flexible don't be afraid to change things or to try something new. Of course if everything is great - then great! Long may it continue, but even success can be fine tuned to bigger success. Good luck, Mike. My feedburner stats do change for me on a daily basis (been from 61 to 27 in the past week or so). I don't think it is due to the quality of posts, just how many times your feed is accessed. On the weekend, for example, less people see your feed as feed readers are generally used by workhorses (like myself), who may not be allowed on blogs during the day, but can easily keep in touch via feed readers such as google reader.
There's a lot of interesting articles about what has been humourously referred to as "the numbers" on the feedburner website (they have, for example, just announced that the MyYahoo! reader is once again trackable)
With that said, I quite agree in the "give people what they want, not what you think they want" philosophy. In the web design business, people have different ideas to what looks good. It can be hard going against what you know looks good, and we do try and convince them what good web design is, but in the end we come to a compromise, depending on the stubbornness of the customer!
Indeed, we have to be able to adapt ouselves to new situations...easier said than done but otherwise we may be losing out on opportunities!
thenand: No, I'll keep going a little longer! agloco didn't appeal to me - I try to mention all that I join (or don't join!)
Rhys: Interesting what you write about Feedburner, perhaps it's a coincidence when my feed numbers go up but their does seem to be a pattern. I think we can get a bit too bogged down though with stats etc.
I like the idea of the customer always being right - though sometimes it's necessary to make sure that they are right.
Tisha: Hello! Though I'd use your exclamation mark - a lot of things in life are easier said than done. I suppose it's as someone said about those that can - do, and those that can't - teach. Yes, I know that's not always so!
Mike.
