Technorati Ranking And Linking
I was looking at my Technorati page today and I see that my ranking is now 13338, which to me seems amazing. Almost too good to be true when you consider that my own target was to get under 50000 and one of my smaller blogs is rated at well over 2 million.

I don't really pay too much attention to rankings, they are just a novelty item as far as I'm concerned. This is just as well as my Technorati improvement simply shows that figures can be manipulated.

Somehow I have been included on one of those link lists, viral things, that are doing the rounds. A part of my getting a lower ranking is because of the extra links I have had through this. I'm now showing 490 links in.

So, if you feel that a better Technorati rating is of value, you know what to do.

If you are looking for links you can get a free one on A Links Blog. They write: 'Have an additional blog linking to yours; just leave us your URL, blog's title, and a short description, and we'll link you; it's that easy. Also, become a contributor and post about your blog or blogs you like, as many times as you want!'

Links are, of course, important for the likes of the Google PageRank but they need to be the right sort of of links. This is what Rhys, whom I have great respect for, explained:

'Nobody knows how PageRank works (it was a collaborative project), but general consensous is that a lot of links, educational and governmental domains, and links from high page rank sources are good. Few links from low page rank sources, links from subdomains (eg. geocities, typepad, but not necessarily blogspot - due to it being owned by Google), heavy javascript, and unoptimised php, asp and cgi pages are bad.'

What I have noticed is that the Google search engine is sending me more visits following the improvement in my PageRank. This can be seen from my Weekly Reports. It has gone from under 100 referrals a week to 170 in the last six weeks.

Following on from what Rhys said links from places such as 1000000 Links and Mister Linker, both with a PR4, appear to be of value. They are always listed, often several times, on my Google list of inward links.

Going back to the improvement of my Technorati rank, it isn't only those blog lists that have helped. I was in the early forty thousands prior to them starting - they just helped to speed things along a little.

My practice is to leave my URL whenever I see the opportunity to do so. This is regardless of their PR etc. You never know what may come from them, they may be of value, maybe not (not all inward links are included on Technorati and Google rankings).

Now, if I have 490 links and they all sent me one hit a day and Google sent me their regular 25, I'd be quite happy ... for a short while. Happy linking.

Nearly forgot, if you want to check your PageRank, or anyone elses, you can here for free.

Good luck,
Mike.

I don't think links from low pank rank sources are necessarily bad nor will they penalize your website in terms of Page Rank.

Google is primarily concerned with what you do On-Site, or who you link out to. If uncontrollable incoming links can devalue one's PR or SERPs, competitors of a specific website could easily harm the website in question by sending them lots of spammy incoming links.

Lastly, Mike .. I think it'll be great if you could spread the Z List because you've got a steady readership which could really help a lot of blogs to get more exposure and backlinks.

Just my thoughts on the matter. :)

Thanks for participating, your blog has been added!

Blog about your Blog has been involved in the Z List, and I don't know how beneficial it actually is. To me it just seems like a cheap link. Our rankings have also gone through the roof with so many linkings.

I don't think having a list of long urls will actually help anyone.

Now 12707 - keep up the great work Mike. No mean feat by any stretch of the imagination. Did you ever try Digital Point?

Mike,

I just checked my Technorati listing for rank and I still have a lot to do so will keep trying. Interesting post that strikes a chord with me at the moment.

maki: I think you are right about in coming links - all are okay. As you say there is no control over who links to a blog.

a links blog: Thanks!

poet: I think it's really all artificial. I don't see many actual referrals arriving from such lists. All it does is, in this case, is to push up the Technorati rating and this means ... no idea of it's value!

Tom: Not really, I had a quick look at Digital Point after your email but haven't been back. Must put that on my 'to do' list. Thanks for the reminder.

John: Thanks. I'm not really sure of the value of the Technorati rankings. Good luck.

Mike.

Apologies. But I strongly disagree if anyone who says that there is no benefit for the Z List.

First of all, I take offence to PoET's suggestion that it's just a cheap link. These are actual blogs and bloggers, you're talking about about and each blog you put on the list is discovered by other people because you took the time to put their blog on your list.

Cheap links are links you get from 1000000 links and Mister Links, websites with thousands of links with PR 0+ for most of their internal pages. These websites usually buy or get links which point only their homepage, so their PR value for the homepage is noticeably higher. A simple search on Yahoo Site explorer for their inlinks will confirm my assumption.

But then again we're not just talking about simple SEO issues here but also community. If you just see the Z List as a way to game the system, it won't work for you. Most of the blogs passing the Z List don't seem to understand the original motive behind it, which is to share the blogs you like.

If you're linked by someone, I think it's just polite to spread the list too. You might never know how many of your readers need the exposure.

If you really want to just talk about the ostensible 'benefits' of the Z List, here are some immediate monetary benefits.

TLA and Review Me are among some of the link buyers who base your link selling power on your Technorati rankings. The higher your ranking, the more money are you likely to receive for your link. Try signing with ReviewMe to see how much of what you earn depends on your Technorati ranking.

PR Benefits. Even the most basic blogspot blog will have PR 2+ individual post pages after it's been around for a year or more. All your incoming links will have PR if you're worried about that.

If you haven't already noticed, some of the incoming links are PR 5+ and above. I've noticed a few PR 6 links on the Z List. Are these cheap links too?

Want another benefit? Technorati is social proof. Rankings are silly but you can't deny that it validates the worth of your blog in some way. If not, why the emphasis on the Top 100 blogs on Technorati?

There's my rant. Sorry if I wrote too much on the topic, Mike.

17/2/07

Well, I never did say there was no benefit from the Z list, so calm down there. I said I don't know HOW beneficial it is. To me, it means different than to you. I see it as gaining traffic and getting your blog noticed. Having your blog on a huge list of URLs hasn't gotten us noticed anymore than before.

The links and link farms are actual sites linking to you as well, Im not taking anything away from a blogger or their site. I'm just saying I don't see how a large list of URLs is going to help anyone much.

You brought up technorati and maybe PR as benefits. Those are very true.

You also mention our readers needing exposure, and thats exactly what BAYB is about so please don't try to preach to me about helping other bloggers, because that's what I am all about.

I have registered our site to Review Me and our price is still the same before and after the Z list. It has no doubt helped out our Technorati rank, and I am a closet Technorati Link Whore lol. I am all about building our links.

So... beneficial for technorati yes. Website exposure and growth? Questionable

"You also mention our readers needing exposure, and thats exactly what BAYB is about so please don't try to preach to me about helping other bloggers, because that's what I am all about."

Not trying to preach at all, so apologies if I came across like that.

Not a personal attack on you or your blog so you don't have to assume that I was saying that you aren't helping any bloggers at all when I KNOW you are.

I do understand that you have a blog that helps to promote other blogs. I'm not daft. Was just miffed that you said links from other bloggers were 'cheap links'.

Got your perspective and I understand where you're coming from now. I agree with you that the Z List won't give you serious web traffic and exposure.

If that's all you're looking for then I guess the Z List is not really for you.

Best of luck for Blog About Your Blog!

poet & maki: Many thanks for your comments and opinions - always welcome. As they say, it's good to talk.

I've written a little about the z-list on today's post (18th Feb).

I've been seeing the same types of things as you describe with the technorati ranking. The more links the better. I still have to understand the google pagerank system, but all in all, I really dont know what all of these numbers mean. For the most part my blog http://timarcher.com is mostly for me to document some of the cool technical tips and tricks I've run across. After discovering technorati though, its become almost a personal game to see how I can boost that number up.

8/4/07

I haven't tried the z-list yet but from what i understand, Search engines are degrading the value of reciprocal links. Isn't there a risk associated with this?
